The Alphas
The alpha pair are the highest rank in a wolf pack. Usually consisting of one male and one female, in which they are mates. The alphas own the land, and must be obeyed by every wolf in the pack. They choose who can and cannot join the pack, they also have the power to banish pack members if wrong doing. The alphas are responsible for everyone in the pack, and the territory. They are responsible for keeping their borders secure, making sure intruders do not step foot into their land.
The Betas
The beta wolves are the second in command. The alpha pair fully trust these wolves, and lower ranking wolves give the beta pair as much respect as they would the alpha pair. The only rank that can dominate the betas are the alphas themselves. But betas have the right to dominate over the lower ranking wolves. Betas follow alphas orders, and usually take over the pack if the alphas are absent.
The Hunters
These wolves lead the whole pack on hunting trips. They are strong and have a great sense of smell, and can track prey easily. Though they take down the prey, they respect the alphas and let them eat first. Though at times, the whole pack eats at once, though breakout fighting can occur during events like these.
The Guardians[/b]
The guardians have the safety of the entire pack in their paws. These wolves border the territory daily, looking out for intruders. If an intruder is trespassing into the territory, the guardians will notify the alphas, wait for orders, and if an order is to attack, they will attack the intruder. These wolves are large and courageous, and must fight off bears or other large predators that come near the den site.
The Subordinates[/b]
The subordinate wolves are usually the newcomers to the pack. The starting rank, and the lowest respected rank other than the omegas. Wolf puppies are usually placed in this rank until fully matured. The subordinates remain in this rank until the alphas place them in a rank when they are evaluated and suited for.
The Omegas
The omegas are the lowest ranked pack member. These wolves must submit to every single pack member, due to an event that put them in this rank. These wolves become omegas because they have done something unforgivable in the pack. Omegas act like slaves to the pack, when the pack is out hunting, the omega will stay at the den and babysit the pups until they return. If an omega sticks around long enough, and are gradually regaining trust to the alphas, the alphas might consider placing them in a permanent position as a subordinate.
These statistics can go for any sort of pack. In some cases, coyotes can create packs, and the line of hierarchy is the same for other species.
