Mental Mental Stability: insane. Personality: Alvarez is quite an odd character. He has good reason to be so. Afterall, eccentric geniuses are never really sane. And that is exactly what Alvarez is. He is a genius, posessing intelligence far beyond his years. He also has the attention span of a cockroach, his short term memory chronically defective to the point that he can no longer retain new information.
At the age of seven a traumatic brain injury left the Osprey with Anterograde Amnesia. While he has no trouble recalling any and all information he knew before the incident, his brain is constantly wiped clean of all events happening after. The wipe occurs around every seventy-three minutes on average, but there are times when it occurs much sooner or much later. Reguardless, should he run into the same creature twice there is good chance he will have absolutely no recollection of the initial encounter. Heck, there is good chance he'll forget everything right in the middle of a prolonged conversation and introductions have to be made all over again.
That being said, even before the injury Alvarez has some strange ticks. He never could understand the use of pronouns and thus never used them. To this day he still doesn't. Every "I," "me," and "my" is substituded with "Alvarez." Every "you," "your," and "he/she/it" is replaced with "darlin'," "mister," or "traveler," depending on gender. It's rare he ever uses another's name, as more often than not he doesn't retain such information for very long.
Alvarez is also wickedly intelligent, for the most part. He has extensive knowledge of the world of humans as well as the world of animals. There is nothing wrong with his long term memory (other than the fact that his short term memories are no longer converted into long term ones), and thus he has retained much of his vast knowledge on the workings of the world. This has left him a bit of a pompous creature, one who loves to show off all he knows. Compared to other predators, he is rather small and inferior after all. Knowledge is the only way in which he can one-up some of the powerful creatures.
He isn't all bad though. Surprisingly, for a solitary creature Alvarez is very social. He willing strikes up a conversation with anyone and in all honesty it is quite hard to get him to shut up. It seems he's got an opinion about everything, though that opinion is constantly changing. The Anterograde Amnesia has left him quite the little hypocrite. He is full of controdictions, and is so stubbornly adament in his opinions that he refuses to acknowledge his past, forgotten ones as even remotely plausable until the most recent one is too forgotten.
In terms of friendship and romance, Alvarez really isn't a bad guy to have on your side. If you can put up with him, of course. While he needs constant reminders of who creatures are, his intelligence is a great asset when exploited properly. He's also relatively harmless, a complete pacifist. Excellent at staying out of harm's way, he has no intentions of dying young. He prefers to observe rather than participate in the action. Of course, he is quite good at accidentally provoking others. His odd, unhelpable habits are often found to be rather annoying. He who he is, though, and Alvarez can't remember wishing he was any other way.
History: Alvarez has had a pretty unusual life for an Osprey. It's had its mundane normalness as well, though. Delouise and Rictor were mates for life, as is common with the Osprey species. They'd been mates for eleven long years, though both are now deceased. The pair had lived long, fulfilling lives, and Alvarez was always proud to call them mom and dad.
In late February of '96, three splochy white and brown eggs had been laid to the pair. One of these eggs contained the young Alvarez, and after weeks of incubation he finally hatched on March 17th. He was the first of the eggs to hatch, followed days later by his sister and brother. The fluffy little chicks were all cover in soft brown and white down, their eyes wide open and curious as their parents lovingly cared for them.
Throughout the spring the little fledglings were taught the Osprey way of life by their parents. They learned to fly and hunt, experimenting with various techniques until they were comfortable in their own skins. Their adult feathers grew in, bodies growing to full height. And as winter finally prepard to settle into the Boreal Forest the young Ospreys took flight and followed the paths their parents had taken to South America for the winter migration.
Alvarez spent the next few years of his life in South America maturing. He retained everything he saw, collecting data and memorizing information for later use. He was intrigued by everything and constantly sought out new knowledge. Not a day went by that he didn't learn something, and it wasn't long before he was too smart for his own good.
At four years of age (and sexual maturity), the Osprey finally returned to his original home in the Boreal forest. He lived on his own, seeking out a mate and yet never really finding one that struck his fancey. He also continued to explore the ways of the world, his migratory travels taking him far and wide throughout the American continents. His life was very much like so for the next three years.
Alvarez's seventh year of life brought about a drastic change for him. He was fishing in the Nurno Creek when it happened. Diving into the water, much as he always did, to catch himself a nice plump salmon lunch, the Osprey had misjudged the depth of the section of river he was over. His dive was too deep for the shallow waters and he ended up crashing into the riverbed. Unable to recover from such a stupid mistake, the swift current swept up his small body and tossed him about like fresh pizza dough. His head smacked against a sharp cropping of rock, delivering damange he would never fully recover from.
The river eventually spit the poor bird out on its shore. The damage had already been done though. His brain had been permanently damaged in the accident. Alvarez would forever suffer from Anterograde Amnesia. His short term memory was sentenced to never properly function ever again. From that point foreward, Alvarez would fail to retain most information for more than an hour, his short term memory constantly being reset before it had chance to convert anything to his long term memory.
For the next six years, Alvarez's life has been interresting, to say the least. He still migrates to warmer climates most winters. He doesn't retain daily information though. In all truth, the bird wouldn't be able to tell anyone at all what his life has been like since that fatefull accident at age seven. He just doesn't remember. And what he doesn't remember cannot be told.
